Essential Care Tips

The most important things to know to keep your fresh-cut tree looking its best from the first day to Christmas morning.

01

Fresh Cut the Base Immediately

As soon as you get home, make a fresh straight cut about 1 inch above the original cut. Tree sap seals the pores within hours of cutting β€” a fresh cut opens them back up so your tree can drink freely.

02

Water Every Single Day

A fresh tree can absorb a quart of water or more on its first day. Check the stand reservoir daily β€” ideally morning and evening in the first week. Never let it run dry; once dry, sap re-seals the trunk and absorption stops.

03

Keep Away from Heat

Position your tree at least 3 feet from any heat source β€” fireplaces, radiators, vents, and TV sets. Direct sunlight through windows will also dry needles rapidly. Cooler rooms dramatically extend tree life.

04

Inspect Your Lights

Before stringing, inspect all lights for frayed or cracked wires, broken sockets, or loose connections. Use only UL-listed lights rated for indoor use. LED lights run cooler and are safer than incandescent options.

05

Turn Lights Off at Night

Always turn off tree lights before going to sleep or leaving the house. Even LED lights generate some heat, and unattended lighting is a fire risk. Use a smart plug or timer for added convenience and safety.

06

Use Plain Water β€” No Additives

Research by the National Christmas Tree Association confirms that plain water is the best choice for tree stands. Additives like aspirin, sugar, bleach, or commercial preservatives do not meaningfully extend tree life and may actually harm the tree.

Everything You Need to Know

A well-watered fresh-cut tree will typically last 4–6 weeks. Fraser Firs and Canaan Firs tend to have the best needle retention. Norway Spruce will last well with consistent watering. Key factors that affect longevity:
  • Daily watering (the single most important factor)
  • Distance from heat sources
  • Room temperature (cooler rooms = longer life)
  • How fresh the tree was when cut
Use a stand with a water reservoir that holds at least 1 quart β€” larger is better. The stand should be sturdy enough to support the weight and height of your tree. Avoid stands with gravel or foam inserts that reduce water capacity. The opening should fit your trunk diameter without shaving off too much bark, as the outer layers of the trunk absorb the most water.
If you plan to have your tree up through Christmas, we recommend cutting it no more than 2–3 weeks before Christmas for best results. If you purchase your tree early in the season, store it in a cool garage or covered porch in a bucket of water until you're ready to display it indoors. Keep it away from freezing temperatures if possible.
Our staff will help wrap your tree in netting and assist loading it onto your vehicle. When transporting:
  • Point the trunk toward the front of the vehicle to reduce wind damage to branches
  • Secure firmly with rope or bungee cords β€” even short drives can cause damage
  • Avoid transporting in an open truck bed at highway speed without covering
  • Get the tree into water as soon as possible after arriving home
Many Ohio communities offer curbside Christmas tree pickup in early January β€” check your local municipal website for schedule. Other options include:
  • Community tree recycling drop-off sites (often converted to mulch)
  • Placing in your backyard as a bird habitat through winter
  • Chipping for garden mulch if you have access to a chipper
  • Placing in a pond or lake (with permission) as a fish habitat
Please do not burn your tree indoors β€” dried trees are a serious fire hazard.

Tree Safety Reminders

Never Leave Lights Unattended

Turn off all tree lights before sleeping or leaving home. Thousands of home fires each year start with Christmas trees. A smart plug timer adds safety automatically.

Keep Children & Pets in Mind

Anchor tall trees to a wall or ceiling hook to prevent tipping. Place fragile, sharp, or small ornaments out of reach of young children and pets. Tinsel can be harmful if swallowed by cats.

Know the Signs of a Dry Tree

If needles drop when you lightly brush a branch, your tree is getting dry. Increase watering frequency. A very dry tree is a fire hazard and should be taken down and disposed of promptly.

Check Extension Cords

Use extension cords rated for the load you're connecting. Never run cords under rugs, pinch them in doors, or daisy-chain multiple power strips. Overloaded circuits are a major fire cause during the holiday season.
